Family Class Immigration Streams

Family

Canada has renewed its focus on family reunification for Canadian citizens and permanent residents.  To qualify as a sponsor, the applicant must at least 18 years old and a Canadian citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act or a permanent resident living in Canada.  If the applicant is a Canadian citizen living outside Canada, they must show that they plan to live in Canada once their sponsored relative becomes a permanent resident.  A permanent resident living outside Canada does not qualify as a sponsor.

The sponsor must prove that they are not receiving social assistance for reasons other than a disability and have enough income to provide for basic needs of any grandchildren (dependent children of a dependent child) of the principal applicant.

The spouse of the sponsor must be at least 18 years old and the relationship must be genuine (wasn’t entered into for permanent resident status in Canada).

Parent / Grandparent

To be eligible to sponsor a parent or grandparent, the applicant must be at least 18 years old, live in Canada and be a Canadian citizen, a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act, or a permanent resident of Canada.  The sponsor must meet certain income requirements and agree to support the applicant and their dependants financially.  The parent / grandparent stream requires the sponsor to submit an online expression of interest to IRCC during the intake period.  Once the intake period closes, IRCC randomly selects applicants to sponsor their parents.  The sponsors then have 90 days to gather all supporting information and submit the application.
